Nope, this isn't setup! Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin...

I was out at Hyde Park Corner shooting traffic for the Panning challenge. Hyde Park Corner is one of the busiest, most hectic junctions in Central London and there's always plenty of traffic. Plus it's right by Park Lane so there's always fancy cars around. Ideal for practicing motion panning I thought.

So, I'm standing in the middle of this massive roundabout with the 100-400 on - was there for about an hour when two community support officers (mini police) came over and started questioning me. To cut a long story short I was officially 'stopped and searched' for shooting traffic. This is apparently a dangerous terrorist infested world we live in and so shooting photographs of traffic is a cause for concern. Yeah right. Since when did Al-Qaeda start doing their recces in high vis gear?

So, bang goes my 'high vis makes you blend in' theory. It works well mostly but I guess not in the middle of tourist/terrorist central.

Whilst they were robbing me of my civil liberties I took the liberty of setting up the tripod and hastily set my timer to 5s intervals and let rip. The police were aware of what I was doing and were quite good natured about it. If they were going to rob me of the last few minutes of good sunlight then I at least wanted a SP for the side challenge, which I got :)

Talk about turning a weakness into an opportunity and all that SWOT crap. Ah, they joys.

p.s. I *so* wanted to say to the one on the right "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper" but for once though t better of it ;)

Glad you turned this into a photo-opportunity. That shows great presence of mind.

LOL, that's great! I love the fact that you still managed to take some pictures even though that's what you were "in trouble" for! haha

I LOVE that you thought to shoot this! Very ingenious! And yes, terrorists are all now wearing hi-vis vests - didn't you get the memo?

Nice pose! Really interesting story, too.

I got escorted out of the local Marriott Marquis when taking photos for the recent architecture challenge. Technically it was private property, despite the large open public areas. I'll spare you the blow-by-blow description, but it was an unpleasant experience. I contributed to the general mood by getting defensive. Looks like you had a better handle on things.

L()L, Seriously, that has to be a bummer. but least they were good sports about having their picture taken. But yeah, the things we do to be like HEY! im not a terrorist, Im not taking images to blow something up, Im not a trouble maker and yet we are constantly the bad guys. However, those people with cameras the size of a credit card take a million and one shots of naughty things and never get caught. Down with the P/S!!!

I'm guessing you gauged their demeanor before you setup to take you shot. Either way you da man! It seems like questioning photogs is becoming quite common and you (and them) did it right, considering that they were just doing their job.

This is much better than my experience 1 1/2 weeks ago with security at a local shopping center who pretty much accused me of lying at what I was taking pictures of until I showed him. He was genuinely surprised to see somebody taking a picture of a flower.
