Yup, you said it - too close! Unfortunately, a close shot like this distorts perspective and although it may have been what you intended, it doesn't produce a (for me) pleasing photo. Sorry.

while i like the composition, this feels severely oversharpened to me. it brings out too muh detail in the cheeks, and look along the cheek's edge where it bumps against the black background. i see halo!
