I was out today trying out an old lens (a Nikon 70-300 f/4.0-5.6) which I have been unhappy with in the past, but was playing with aperture values and shutter speeds. Came across some fowl (I have no idea what kind) and they were doing some cool flying, hanging around, so I stayed for five minutes and shot some. This came out of the shoot, and I really like the composition (it's pretty heavily cropped). There's something about the tree that looks flat, or maybe (in the end) oversharpened? I still like it, but I'd like it to do more-might try again. Lightly processed in Lightroom (conversion to B&W and exposure, blacks, etc.), even lighter in PSCS3 which was just smart sharpening and noise reduction (with a touch more sharpening as part of neat image). Might have overdone that.

it looks like the light was really bright for this shot - hence the rather dull feel of the bark. the bird in flight is really very cool - i just more of it were in view. i may have actually missed it if not for the title you gave

Yup, definately not a shot you can revist in the field and retake! Where you shooting RAW? am sure a re edit will help give the bark a little more bite ;) I might even rotate it a touch then crop till you lose the white on the bottom right (the rotation would be to keep the birds tail in the shot).

What a neat capture. I like the texture but agree with you on the flatness of tone.

It took me a couple seconds to notice that it was a bird back there. So it was like "seeing" the photo two seconds after seeing it. I like the composition and the crop.

There's only one thing I'd like to see messed with. I'd like to see the tree darkened up a tad to give a little more contrast with the white background. The tree looks a little washed out.

nice easter egg in this shot in the background, I almost missed it. i will agree with you that it appears flat, maybe bossting the contrast with levels or USM could help that a bit.

The small view, the personal perspective on the world, a shared intimacy, and a little vulnerability is what you teach me here. Do not be afraid to share that type of view or make collections of them. They comprise our world, after all.

omg I am one of those horrible speed voters because if I was going too fast, I certainly would have missed the goose in the background. How cool is this? I was totally focused on how the tree looks like a clay sculpture. I guess I think because of the gray textures. And then I saw the bird. Very cool indeed.

What reaches out and grabs me about this is the unusual shape of that branch -- it draws you in and makes you want to look closer. Then when you look, you get the delightful unexpected surprise of the goose's neck and head. I love it! This is awesome.

The bird is a quiet surprise when one opens the shot from the thumbnail. It's a hint of a bird, not the bird itself (though yes, I realize the bird is really there). I do think something you did oversharpened the tree a tad but I'm of the less sharpening mindset to begin with so feel free to ignore this last bit.

The tree is imposing the scene imo, interesting though. Sharpening doesn't show much, but at iso200 I don't find noise reduction nessesary.

Grounded, Flight - The title a interesting concept. Intentionally combining these two ideas in a picture, for me would be an after thought. A result of the experience and image.
Leading & waiting for the bird to fly into a scene, rather than use of the more conventional pan technique, can be a choice, but may be more often, intuitive at the time of the event.
This is an unusual and interesting image, beautiful expressive idea.

I like the goose that is oof in the background. This looks like it needs some more contrast in the image.
