Taken through the window of the coffee house where I eat lunch a lot.

Following the suggestion of e301, I did the b&w conversion in RAW. I used Digital Photo Professional which came with the camera.

a story in a glimpse, in a word, in a split second - stellar work

A great little story, a documentary still from life on State Street. I love how clear his face and "assessment" is a great title.

Great candid! I find it comical that the guy is holding a book but not reading, he seems very much distracted by the lady walking by. Nice contrast throughout the picture.

In addition to getting a splendid almost ironical moment, this picture is chock full of interesting features and goings on: main event of 2 people framed by 2 tree trunks, palm and eucalyptus, and m'sieur w. real book framed by arch beyond which are further benches and sitters/watchers and shorter palms and then you have the slender tree with 2 almost twining upper main branches dividing the 2 heads of 2 strolling companions just at the tree crotch. (Fence railing also at crotch levels of main protaganists - sorry, didn't intend to go there, it was the trees...) Some coffee shop, I say.

Brilliant candid! This works on so many levels and I've just spotted the last 2 numbers of the building in the bg - unlucky for him hehe.

A small amount of movement brings alive a fertile yet static background, you teach me. The journalist's view. The viewer viewing the viewer. Useful quirky metaphors.

Nice candid street shot. I liek the motion of the girl and how the guy watching is nice and crisp. Her jacket is a bit bright, maybe a bit of dodgeing to tone it down just a tad, but then again it might not pop as much agains the background.

Ha this is coool. I love how you caught him checking her out. Hmm, is he really reading the book, or is it just an excuse to sit there? I need to get out and take some candids. Pics like these are fun!

What a great candid capture this is. I think your title fits it perfectly, and it's obvious what he's up to, and just the right amount of blur to add to the story.

This is excellent. What an awesomely timed capture. I've been trying conversions in RAW as well - they have a "real" feel to them, don't they? Not overworked - just real.

Wow, there is so much that I thought about while viewing this photo. Interesting how you get so many thoughts from one photo. I love the story it tells and that she is blurry.. leaves you guessing what she looks like. Does he really sit there and read or does he check people out..makes you wonder what he is thinking while sitting there and what book is he reading.. sorry..I really like this picture. I even like the blown out areas. Not all b/w need to be perfectly light. Oh..and check out his collar.

I like this photo a lot. Initially, my eyes are drawn to him, because he is in focus, and appears to be the subject. Then I follow his eyes, which of course leads me to the OOF girl. I like the feeling of movement that she adds to the photo. However, this guy has been busted, and should be reading his book;-)

I really love this candid shot. I wonder if he spotted you taking it. I wonder if it could do with a little bit of a boost in contrast in the midtones. But, really a good one.

Very good. I like the way you focused on the guy and caught him watching the woman walking by. Framing him with the archway in the background makes him even more the center of the image. I also like the crop as it puts the center of the image between him and the woman which enhances the scene. Good job.

Wonderful candid with a great expression of the guy and his book. There's a lot to see in the background, but that's not disturbing. Nice contrasts, but perhaps this photo could use a tiny bit more black and all the horizontal lines in the background seems to go up. A little rotation could fix that, but then the fence in the foreground is going down. Don't know what is best.

Very interesting. Great candid capture. Perfect focus on the guy. I'd like to know what your shutter speed was on this shot.
