Based on comments from jasonlprice (thanks, Jason!) I re-edited this, and attempted to bring out more of the uniform. When editing the first time, I wasn't sure which way to go - silhouette or detail, since it was somewhere in between. This was a quick candid and I didn't change the settings to account for strong backlighting.

This version is a composite of two RAW conversions. The RAW file was desaturated, then one version was underexposed from the original, the other overexposed. Layered one over the other, erased at about 80% over the gentleman to bring him out more. Didn't really do a lot of dodging and burning but did try to darken the wall he's sitting on/against.

(Note - really taken with the 300D but I've removed that one from the portfolio.)

Oh yea Deb, I think you have done a great job on the reedit. Nothing wrong with the original at all, but the darker walls of this one really force your attention to the young man's face and now those boots and camo really punctuate this shot. Great job. On another note it is very encourageing to me that you would actually make application of the comments and re-edit the shot. That is an inspiration to me....

This is definitely better. A great shot. Having his head against the light like that is perfect.

Melethia, I like your edit as the detail in the uniform brings more attention to the young man who is the focus of the picture. There is such a solemness to this picture. I like it.

I prefer this version over the other. This is a great example of somebody not taking the small things for granted.
