This is a natural scene for our house. I had some ideas for an outdoor shoot, but it's been too cold to go out for very long with the little one. I can't honestly say I was trying anything new for this shot, other than not trying to keep his attention on the camera.

Here's the original.

I agree with the comments about a tighter crop. You seem to have gotten pretty low down to take the shot, but perhaps even lying flat on yout stomach would have change the composition and perspective of the photo?

I love this scene! It is pretty much the scene at my home too. :) You've already got plenty of comments about cropping off the bear, I would have probably cropped the curtaina nd the toy on the right as well. I love his concentration on reading the book, as if the rest of the world does not exist.

You've recieved some good critique from the others. I'm with them on a tighter crop, (mostly to remove the bear). That said, I like a little room around the young man as it gives more context to the picture. It's really a genuine moment caught candidly and the lighting/processing/focus are all very good.

natural scene??? It's natural in my house as well. Fooey on all those DNMC'ers. ;)

Nice/cute shot, like the way the little one is posed, lighting is good.

Agree with other comments that it is too busy. The subject is the child (and not the toys) and you have too many distractions. Thus would
a) definitely crop the left to get rid of the bear and the lower green storage container (the bear should go in any case, because it is being rude by mooning us)
b) maybe crop the right (by an amount approximately equal to the left crop)

If you were to redo this, then would move closer, or move the little one a little further away from the shelving/containers, so the background becomes partially out of focus.

Based on the original, you definitely want to get closer (or use a longer lens if you have one) so that the child fills up the picture better.

Hope this helps.

Technically well done... nice lighting. I would like to see it simplified a little. The bear in the corner is distracting as are some of the other toys. A little cropping would do wonders...

A different interpretation of the theme, but there are no DNMCs in side challenges :-)

Shutter was 1/20? Not 1/200? I would think you'd have needed the faster speed with a little one or there'd be more blur. And there is more DOF than I'd expect at f/2.8, so you must have been reasonably far away when you shot this. Could you post a link to the original? I'd like to have an idea of what you had to work with in terms of crop and such.

The lighting is pretty soft which is good. He's also at a slight angle from the camera and the toy rack, which is more interesting to me than him being squared up with both, so I like that choice in your composition.

He looks a little pale, which he could be, or it could be that all the bright toys are making him look paler.

If you are trying to show the busyness of your home the fact that he's quietly looking at a book contradicts that idea, plus IMO everything looks remarkably tidy for a toddler's play area ;-) The shot also "feels" very heavy to me on the left with the toy rack and the toddler, and not so much on the right side, but not negative space, either.

So, a few things I might do differently. One is get closer so the boy is in focus and the rest is not. And I think I'd try to position him and angle the camera so the only things in the frame are boy and toy rack and maybe a little floor, but no blank wall or fabric (drapes?). I also might try a B&W conversion so the bright toys don't draw my eye so much, but if half the point *is* the toys than ignore that idea, and maybe just deaturate the toys some and/or increase his color ... though I know messing with skin color can be a PITA.

Hope at least some of my ideas are useful.
