The Winter Sundial

The wintry sun slants soft against the gnomon
From which hangs a glittering silken thread,
Lingering presence of spider unknown,
Frozen in time, so patiently it waits.

The silent stillness calms the pace of time,
Weak shadow barely marks the time of day,
The Roman num'rals now cannot be seen,
Painted out by Winter's icy hands.

The strength'ning sun its zenith now attains,
Faint rays of warmth and hope can now be felt;
The tiny beads of water turn to steam
And leave the Roman dial to speak again.

For now the time shines bright in burnished brass:
'Noon', solar time, on his diurnal way
Great Helios can once again proclaim,
But mean time in Greenwich: twelve-o-six.

The ocean is the most perfect color in this. Nice muted palette of colors, too. Wee bit of color noise (from HDR or shadows/highlights, maybe?) in the clouds that may have distracted a few picky voters.

Oooo I love the beach when it's moody and wild and you've captured that beautifully. As to why it didn't score higher, well it is DPC you shoulda put a naked girl on one of those boats. :P

Nicely processed. I assume this is HDR or at least with shadow/highlight adjustment? The light and colours is excellent and this is reflected in the high score. If anything it's the lack of a single identifiable subject that hurts this (the mast isn't strong enough as an anchor point) as our eyes are wandering all over the image.

Nice enhancement to the look of those clouds. You came within spitting distance of a 6 on this one!

Biggest issue I can see that may have held it back is the hulls of the boats blend in with the beach colors too much, so the eye does wanders between the boats and the scene out in the water behind them.

Once again, Terry, this is one of my favorites of the challenge. I never do guess which is yours, because you are so versatile. I think the processing on this is wonderful. I love the soft colors, and the composition is really good.

Such soft light, but even better, such wonderful shadows, hidden here and there. Under the boat, in the clouds at the horizon. You really have to search, but they're there, with secrets, and memories, and just a tiny hint of anger. I hope it's not me they're angry with . . .. Delightful earth tones throughout here, wonderfully composed, wonderfully seen scene, and yes, a respectable score that still shows it wasn't fully appreciated. More people need to look for the shadows.

I thought this was a lovely concept - the sundial. Good strong color contrasts, of the "moody" feel, which suits the battered-looking landscape. Your score is darn respectable!

It does look like a nice scene, however, to me, there's not enough contrast between the boats and the beach to make them stand out. Also, the clouds seem to draw the eye since they are the lightest part of the image.

You can preserve the muted colours (which do work well in this scene) even if you bump the contrast.

I like the muted colours, it really complements the threatening sky... great shot! Perhaps more focus on the boat with the mast could also add to it, giving more perspective to the sizes etc. Well done!

Nice clean image, but for some reason everything looks miniature to me?

I would have preferred it without the black border, I think it's lovely in it's own right and perhaps that added to the distortedness?

I like the subdued colors here, and the cool water along the horizon.
