A huge hole in the road, on the way to Sumbawunga, Tanzania
...continued
I was also very chuffed with a conversation I had with a little old man on the way. We were trying to figure out how much father we had to go. I was out of the car, so I did the talking. It’s one of the times I was glad I wear a skirt travelling. No one is shocked by my mid-calf twill big skirt. Plus, you can pee standing up in it, and no-one knows. Very useful. So, the man and our chat. I had my phrase book out, and we started in. However, he didn’t really measure distances in kilometres, or miles, but in hours or days (I think – Swahili not being my strong point). So, we finally figured out – counting villages! He named the villages and we counted on our fingers together to Sumbawanga. We were both thrilled with this bit of creative communication. We separated with cheery ‘Thank yous’ and ‘Jambos’, and walked off feeling a bit happier.
So, we drove through Sumbawanga to check out the south-bound road. We had seen the north – more dirt. We got to the end, and the bridge had collapsed. O. We asked a man at the gas station when it had fallen down – he checked his watch and said ‘Last year’.
