The journey was – challenging. It took us about 6 hours to go 100K. M and I had to get out frequently, so the car could go over bumps. We had to fill in a few holes as well (thank goodness we brought the shovel, and insisted on packing it in the front – J wanted to put it in the boot), but we made it to Sumbawanga, and were elated when we saw tarmac – 3rd gear!

We passed through tons of nameless villages on the way – waved at hundreds of people. At one point, when M and I were walking behind the car, we passed some people coming the other way. We said hello, and kept going. I can imagine the conversation when they got home. “We passed a white family on the way home. The man was driving and made the two women walk behind the car. I wonder how far they’re going? It must be some white thing…’

This is just very, very lovely. You really have a knack, in-camera and via processing, to make one feel as if one were really there.
