A desicated Physalis alkekengi, indeed. Touche, Wink. Yes, it is a real plant. It is quite ommon in gardens here in Belgium and very hardy. Once they dry out like this they are still quite tough (MUCH less fragile than they look!) and sit in a vase for a LONG time until many dustings damage them. I still have this branch with many on it ... I will shoot it again soon and post.

Here is a photo that I found on the internet that shows them just before and just after desication in the fall. They are much more vibrantly orange/red from early to late summer.

Looks like Physalis alkekengi, winter cherry, and a very nice photo of it too. Most people only ever capture the red papery covering, but this is just as beautiful, if not more so.
