More sidelighting would enhance the textures - the idea is to make a 2D photo show the 3D world and this doesn't really do it. I understand what you after here, your idea I think was good, but you're lacking the compositional skills to pull it off. So google composition as it applies to painting and photography. Rule of thirds and leading lines are common ones, but there are many more.
