I learned about lighting from this entry. Thank you for the comments that suggested that.

Heh! I love the look. I use onboard flash when I'm shooting stuff that folks at work ask me to shoot (parties, meetings, ceremonies - odd stuff like that) and oddly, no one ever comes back to tell me that the flash was too harsh. :-) But for "professional" stuff, or to improve skills, onboard camera flash is generally not recommended (though it does work somewhat well as fill flash outside). I find it hard to light people well without all the fancy doo-dads that the portrait folks use, but natural window light if you have it works well, and a simple reflector of white posterboard if it's handy will fill in on the side opposite the window. It looks dorky, but it works. I've been trying it with cats, which is a bit harder since they refuse to sit still, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I think you met the challenge well and caught an excellent expression!

Well it's a shame that this is a sub-5 shot. I can't say that I agree with it but the voters have spoken. You did get some good advice tho. I think you did a GREAT job of catching the right expression, and to me, that's half the battle won. Keep on truckin, woman.

Great shot! It is perfectly exposed. My only complaint is that the flash has created a shadow from her hand... Maybe there wasn't, but if there had been any way to light this from the side somehow, perhaps that would have fixed it. Just a thought... otherwise this is nice! :)

To me, the light on the hand seems a bit harsh, the shadow is somewhat distracting, and I think the eyes might've popped a bit more if this were sharpened.

looks like florescent lighting or something. otherwise, it is a nicely shot photo.

you'll probably hear this a lot...kill the camera's flash, it rarely does the subject any favours. Use indirect or natural lighting. Good try!
