...OK must be relative. But J was in a driving mood, so on we went. He decided not to wait for the ferry and drive north instead. The road to the border was – interesting. Zambian roads are amazing compared to ones we were on. But we made it to the border in one piece. The border guards in Zambia were very nice, if a little bored. They get around 80 people a year through the border post – its name is Zombe, fittingly. One of the guards had just been transferred from Livingston – where they probably get 80 people every hour! He spoke fluent English and was obviously very sophisticated and cosmopolitan. I wonder who he pissed off to be transferred here? So, he was a bit desperate for conversation and socialising.
We then drove across no-man’s-land to Tanzania. There was no one at the border post so we had to wander around a bit to attract attention. Not hard when you’re the only Europeans through in ages. There were many more border people on the Tanzanian side. Also all very bored. So we had to do vehicle checks, then a health check. At first, we were horrified and thought it was going to be a case of ‘bend over and say “aaaah”’, but we just had to produce our yellow fever vaccination certificates. Phew.
Then it was into the immigration room to have our passports pored over by nosy, bored immigration officials. They asked many questions, we filled out many forms. They took our passports, looked at them for ages, then said – this has the wrong date on it. The Zambian guards had put the 8th, not the 7th on their stamp. Not a different time zone then?? So, we walked back to Zambia, found the guards again (they had gone back home) and they changed the date. Then back to Tanzania, where they were nosy again, and they finally stamped. On into Tanzania
