This is the road from to Sumbawunga, Tanzania.

The ferry is being used to take refugees somewhere, so hadn’t shown up. Also, it was $50 for foreigners. How much would the car be? We hemmed and hawed, and went away to think about it. We decided to stay in Mbala, 40k up the road, as Mpulungu had a definite harbour town feel (plus tons of truckers waiting for their cargoes from the ferry.)
The Grasshopper Inn, which is supposedly the best in Mbala, was – well – it had beds. Mbala was a weird town – very old colonial with damp rot. Pretty, in a falling down sort of way. The hotel could have been very nice, with a lot of TLC and DIY. The staff were all friendly; we met the Mayor in the bar, but the buildings needed a lot of work. There was this Bangladeshi doctor in the room across from our shared toilet, who was living in the hotel – poor sod. I’m sure he was just lonely, but he was a bit too friendly. There was a floating poo in the toilet. We had chicken for dinner – again. We were assured the road to Tanzania was OK...
