 The main road from Mpulungu, Zambia to Tanzania.

December 8th - Sumbawunga, Tanzania

We’re sitting in the Upondo View Hotel in Sumbawunga, considering our options – which is one, really. We must go south.

We arrived in Mpulungu quite early on the 6th. The drive down the hill to the harbour was stunning. Mpulungu lies at the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika. We were driving down a twisty hill, and finally saw the lake. We all whooped with joy. It was surrounded by dark hills, there were big black clouds to the west, and she lay there, like a big shiny silver thing. Very Big. Standing on the dock, Zaire to the left Tanzania to the right.

I get a sense of how it must have felt, traveling over such a rough road and hemmed in by the lush greenery, to have that expanse of lake come into view.
