On the same road in Zambia
...continued
I still find it amazing how fluent people are in English. Most rural people over 45 in Botswana have only a smattering of English. Here, everyone we have met speaks it very well, with few misunderstandings. We met a man on the road from Serenje, when had given up driving, stumped by cramps and a pothole that took up most of the road. Fine in a sensible car, but a Chico? Hmm… Se we stopped, pondered, stretched, rubbed our bums, and this man on a bicycle stopped for a chat. He was very pleasant and turned out to be the Governor of the local PTA. In a field beside the road, full of lush green grass, there were hundreds of black mounds, smooth and well shaped. I asked Mr. PTA, and he said they were termite mounds. There was a road crew working just down from where we stopped (that is, they seemed to be working close to the road, so I call them a road crew, but I didn’t see much road improvement around them…) so, while J talked to Mr. PTA, we allowed the workers to ogle us. Vaguely flattering. Although we know it’s our novelty value more than anything else that makes us attractive.
