This wasn't HDR, but rather a result of the conditions that I was shooting under: To avoid the blown out reflections everywhere like what you can see on the aerial root on the left I found that I have to shoot on a complete overcast and dark day. Then in post processing I use levels to brighten things up a little. I don't like that "HDR look" either and normally in post processing (of any kind) I try to limit my manipulation to just short of turning my images artificial while maximizing what I can.

(One of the other shots in that thread was the HDR shot)

I can't tell you how many times I have looked at the mangroves and wondered how I could take a photo to show their unique beauty.
Your photo here is exactly what I always picture in my mind. Beautifully seen and shot!
