I stood on a chair since Aaron is pretty tall and I wanted to be eye level or a little higher than him. I had my softbox turned horizontal above and behind me pretty much putting light almost straight down on his face. I then I had my oval reflector right under his face to bounce the light back into his eyes. It created smooth lighting onto his face while still having depth. The background is a white background very lightly lit with a back light but I had Aaron stand so far from the background it appears gray/blue.
For those of yall who are interested in the processing, I did the basic normal headshot editing I do (cloning out blemishes and stray hairs, very light airbrushing, etc.) After I got done with that I wanted to add a little pop, so I duplicated the layer, set it to soft light and then did a hue saturation layer to bring down the saturation. Then I duplicated the original layer and set it to linear light and passed a high pass filter over it and then brought down the opacity.
This shot looks fantastic to me. The catchlights are great. I just started playing with lighting and have been stuck thinking in a more two-dimensional space. You've opened my mind to so many more possibilities. Thanks!
That's pretty cool what it does to his eyes. I believe the way you've used your reflector is similar to what photographers generally call a "beauty dish". This works great for someone with perfect features such as him and an excellent technique for fashion models.
