A snapshot of my cousin, Megan, at Thanksgiving, used to experiment with a Dave Hill imitation technique. Altered slightly from the version found on Flickr. Numbers may vary according to size and lighting variances of photos. The notes on Flickr say this works best on an photo with wraparound lighting, which is probably quite true. Lighting here was incandescent light over the table plus a second incandescent above the kitchen island behind Megan.

Original here was given a little shadow/highlight and a light application of sharpening before beginning work.

(1) Run all your color correcting and Neat Image first. Especially the noise removal - everything herein will amplify the noise, so take out what you can ahead of time. Work on a full-size image.

(2) Duplicate Layer. High Pass, 4.0, blend: vivid light. Flatten.

(3) Duplicate layer. High Pass, 6.9, blend: color, opacity: 30%. Flatten.

(4) Duplicate layer. Gaussian blur, 9.4.

(5) Add layer mask (hide all). Select eyes & mouth w/ lasso. Select - inverse.

(6) Very large brush tool, 30% opacity. Run over entire image.

(7) Deselect all and flatten.

(8) Unsharp mask: 55/30/0

(9) Resize to 640 and smart sharpen: 120/0.1
