Here's my test-shot of the softbox. No editing apart from resize/crop/sharpen. I'm looking a little tired because it was about midnight by the time I finished. :)
The softbox front is about 1m from my face, 550EX on I think 1/4 power. The background wall is about 2m behind me, and also lit by the softbox light spill. A reflector would help a little to fill the shadows.
Overall, not bad for $13 and a few bits a pieces lying around the house. It is also very sturdy, so I expect it to last a while, and easy to setup and pack away.
