 Scores be damned.. I'm proud of this photo! :)

A paint brush strapped to a cymbal stand suspended in front of a piece of cardboard painted black. The stars are both glow-in-the-dark paint, and pinholes illuminated with a studio light behind it.

Here's a picture of the setup:


A few days of setup, with many different ideas. I am happy with the final result.

Editting included cropping, some basic sharpening, dodging and burning, and some very minimal cloning.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Obviously I could have been happier with the score. :)

From the comments, I think I know why this scored so low.

First of all, the paint brush wasn't obvious in the picture.. The head was too small and not 'paint brushy' enough I guess. It wasn't lit very well because the black paint was too glossy and ended up causing too much shine with any amount of light.

Second, as Melethia pointed out, the picture looked computer generated. I actually take this as quite a compliment considering how low-tech the shoot actually was!

Once again, a great learning experience!

Interesting concept. I like the light trail effect in the stars and the emphasize on Orion. Is that a phone cord?

very interesting image, i like it. perhaps the pencil is a bit too dark and the main star is too in middle, but a good idea.

To me, this looks more like computer generated art than a photograph, though I'm sure it is a photograph (or it wouldn't be here - duh.)
