Photographer’s Notes
I left the house today looking for a photo journalism shot (which I got and which will score middle of the pack at best). Along the way, I also got another photo that further editing would develop. This one, although very similar to the photo journalism image, was edited with advanced editing.

I confess this is a bit of an experiment for me. I have similar straight-from-the-camera and significantly-edited images side-by-side in the voting in two different challenges. Will voters notice? Will they hammer me for this? Will the power of editing prevail? Or will the vastly larger number of free study entries hammer my second entry into mush? Time will tell.

In any event: I like my city; and I like these images of my city. Maybe you will too.

Post Processing
In general, my editing strategy was to: 1) Select the sky and darken it to make it more dramatic; 2) Select the Needle and mostly preserve it as shot; and 3) Select the city and improve its brightness and contrast. Once done, I worked on the flattened image to further refine.
• Rotate Canvas
• Select: Sky, Needle, City
• Darken Sky (Nikon Capture)
• Color Correct City (Curves Layer)
• Adjust Needle (Curves Layer)
• Flatten Image
• Adjust(Brightness/Contrast Layer)
• Dodge & Burn (Overlay Layer)
• Adjust (Brightness/Contrast Layer)
• Reduce Noise (Photoshop Noise Reduction)
• Adjust Further (Brightness/Contrast Layer)
• Adjust (Hue/Saturation layer)
• Sepia (Photo Filter Layer)
• Adjust Further (Brightness/Contrast Layer)
• Resize Image (Bicubic Sharper)
• Modify Photo Filter Layer
• Save for Web
This seems like a lot of steps, even for me, but the image is intact. An observer would describe the original as a photo of the Seattle skyline. Another disinterested observer would describe the edited version as a photo of the Seattle Skyline. So my conscience is clear on editing.
