Today we decided to make yet another trip to the orchard for more apples and pumpkins. It sort of worked out because it was a nice warm fall day and wasn't very crowded. And they had Fujis, which happen to be my favorite apple.

After we got apples we had to take the tractor out to the pump patch. Since it wasn't crowded the driver waited while us and another family got pumpkins. I had some other pictures but was drawn to how the pumpkins scattered all over the place and happened to have the 10-20 on the camera and couldn't resist snapping as many as I quickly could.

This one almost ended up on the scrap pile and I was going to submit one of the girls on the wagon but decided to give it one more chance. I'm glad I did. I tonemapped and it looked OK but I didn't have the polarizer on and the ground looked really contrasty. I tried a few filters and ended up trying NikEfex Midnight Blue filter. I undid filter, cloned out family, copied pumpkins, color dodged, and did filter again. The dodging, apply filter, and undoing filter was an iterative process unless I lightened just enough to make ground interesting and to balance it out.

I'm posting such detail on how I arrived at this to show what could be done with something if you keep trying new things. This picture has an overall dark feel to it and you should see plenty of detail in the lower half.

Great processing. I know that the Wicked Witch is just outside the frame.

Totally adore this effect! It's like a fantasy world and I half expect elves and trolls to come out of the woods to start collecting pumpkins. Fabulous!
