Thanks for all the comments and I'm glad it was appreciated by some! This is pretty much straight from the camera with very little USM applied. No setup required..well except for sticking a pencil in the end of a real arrow...This is how I envisioned the shot when I thought of the idea so in my mind it was a success. I choose the shallow DOF to place all the attention on the tip of the pencil and make you ask the question "What is that pencil?"...Notice that it was shot 4 stops up from maximum so I did choose the one with greater DOF, LOL.

Jason, my niece, who posed for my Pencil shot looked through this challenge, and she said this was her favorite. I have to agree that it is truly outstanding. At first glance I thought "huh?". Then I saw how sharp the focus is on the pencil tip. I love the DOF -- the pencil seems to be poking out of my computer screen. The bokeh is lovely.

Fantastic idea and very nice use of shallow depth of field - one of my favorites for the challenge.

Great shot . The use of bokeh here is not distracting and the DoF on the pencil is wonderful. The overall composition of the shot is well done and the lighting is well used to tell the story of the shot. Nicely done.

Did you do this for real or is it a setup? I'm thinking the second. ;-) I think that I would like to see more DOF for this. Your bokeh isn't all that pleasant...

love this composition. You did a great job with the depth of field in the distance. It looks like your pencil point might have been a little out of focus still and you over corrected in your post processesing though. Otherwise, I think this would have been my top pick!

Great perspective. Good take on the challenge. Bokeh is nice, and I agree with your decision to blur out the archer.
