She walked into my office and sat down, as though she'd walked into my office and sat down a million times before. She had elegant fingers and she reached into her purse. I reached for my gun that I keep next to the bottle of whiskey in the top desk drawer. In this town, you've got to be ready for anything or you'll find yourself lying in a hole with only the groundhogs to keep you company. She pulled out a cigarette. It was long. Real long. No cigarette had any business being that long. She started to reach into her purse again, but I was already striking a match with my thumb for her. She looked me straight in the eye. Like she wanted to say something. A burning question. Burning so hot I could see the flames dancing in her eyes. I knew what she wanted. I could feel the heat between us too. She leaned forward and I lit her cigarette. I watched her eyes through the smoke. Liar's eyes, I thought.

The first time I heard her voice, I knew it was trouble. This type are always trouble. Trouble with a capital T... "Let me tell you why I'm here, Mr Spade".

You have got to be kidding me! I don't know what to say, except "You were robbed!"

I'm astonished this didn't ribbon, and dumbfounded it didn't even make the top ten . . show's what I know . .

I think this is a genuinely excellent shot and deserved to finish at the top. Well done.

Really like the concept. Composition and balance are great. The one thing I would like to see is just a tiny bit more smoke.

This is a really cute idea. The lighting is a little harsh though. The shadow of her arm on the shoulder is distracting.

This is my favorite. Perfect composition. Nice, dramatic lighting. If one weren't looking for a pencil, it would absolutely pass as a cigarette. Nice work!

Did I just say 'Excellent' ?

For my money a clear ribbon winner.

I like this picture and I see your idea, but I wish the pencil was a little sharper and stood out more.

Good black & white image - great contrast. You did so well disguising the pencil, I can't even tell it is one. Good luck in the challenge.

I love this photo. Great drama and detail, right down to the smoke rising from the pencil's eraser!

Interesting idea. Might just be my monitor, but the pencil seems a little overexposed and the hat a little underexposed.

Nice portrait. Just that the pencil couldn't be recognized clearly. I like the lighting though.

Great composition, excellent exposure and contrast, and the title is perfect (great reference!). The slight smoke is a perfect touch to bump it to a 10 from me.
