Boletus Edulis. After a very, very dry summer in Michigan, it has rained almost non-stop this Fall. The mushroom crop is amazing, both in quantity and variety. This is a good specimen of an excellent edible mushroom. The reindeer lichen is soft and spongy in wet weather, and crunchy in dry weather. It carpets the woodlands.

I voted this is a 6, Julianne. I like the composition and choice of subject, and the mushroom's color is reflected nicely in the needles. I tend to prefer higher contrast, though. Also, as a macro, I look for really crisp details. I see them in the lichen, but not in the mushroom. Of course, DOF is a major challenge in macros. The lichen actually looks a little oversharpened, although that might be an artifact of the small image size. I wonder how this would look if you did a gaussian blur on a duplicate layer and then set the opacity to about 50%? It might add a nice glow to the mushroom.

Very very striking. The two tone colors are terrific. The way the needles match the mushroom in color gives a nice fullness to the shot. The competing textures also give a ton of interest. On the basis of those qualities alone this should have been a six type shot. I am sure the focus mongers out there voted you down a bit which is a shame.

Very nice composition and the muted colors work very well together. I like the science tidbit included in the comments, too!

What the heck? I was expecting this to finish in at least the top 30! The composition is really good, with the photograph being an excellent example of a true nature study.
