 I've submitted this with the fullest expectation of getting a terrible score. I'm just shooting for enjoyment and loved this one, though it's hardly material that's going to do well in a DPC Free Study. Now I'm back at uni I'm hoping to build up a number of shots that focus on student life. This can be my first. It is staged (and I am the model) but in fairness that is pretty much how I look most nights!

The setup was more complex than you might think, though still achieved in a very makeshift fashion. The light source above the subject's head had to be directed downwards more (I dangled a towel in front of it) and diffused slightly (paper) and there's a gold reflector to the right.

Quite a lot of editing has gone on as well - this one is a subtle blend of 4 exposures (from RAW conversion) done manually in photoshop to get the light suitable on the subject's face and to lighten the shadows a little. The background wood was too bright as well so that was taken down a notch. In addition to this there's some dodging and burning (not much) and USM. Using the different exposures has meant that the kind of selective curves, hue/sat and levels layers that I have needed in the past were not necessary on this occasion. Choosing the right reflector helped as well - having a silver one for the 'Half' challenge caused me no end of problems in PS.

This shot was taken with the Tamron 17-50mm, which is a lens that impresses me more and more every time I use it.

nice lighting but looks a bit too posed. maybe if the beer bottle was tipped?
