Backlight - I had my son sit on a small stool, with the diffused sunlight backlighting him. Plenty of light to see his features with no dodging and strong enough to highlight his hair. Nothing spectacular, just a nice family portrait. 7:55am.

I like the rim lighting and the bokey.

Excellent use of natural light. I like how the ambient light creates the warm colors of his face. Extremely nice shot!

really good use of natural light, I like the highlights. If you wanted to brighten up his face, you could try a levels adjustment. take the middle slider in levels and move it to the left until it says about 1.75. It will brighten up his face really nicely. A nice family protrait!

I really like the lighting in this. Glow around the hair and the wonderful warm color of his face is very nice. Well done. PS..Nice bokeh! Would have liked to see not quite as much crop on the bottom as his chin appears to crowd the bottom edge a bit.

What I like is the glow on his face. What was the light reflecting on to give him that look?

It's done well. The nice gooey bokeh helps too. If there were something in front, like Joe's suggestion of a reflector highlighting parts of the side closest to the camera, it might also be appealing.

I love the light in this image - I particularly like the way the backlighting shows the shape of his head - it's VERY appealing.
