Challenge: Still Life With Motion (Advanced Editing V)
Collection: 2007 Challenges
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II
Date: Sep 22, 2007
Aperture: F4
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/250
Galleries: Still Life
Date Uploaded: Sep 22, 2007

I was not planning on entering but the idea of photographing a gyroscope in action seemed to fit really well. I hope people get the reference to motion while still.

Shot in my basement "studio" - and I do mean this loosely! - a single tungsten bulb on a floor lamp, a card table, and a white mat. Opened RAW image in CS2 - cropped, adjusted exposure, white balance and curves. Save. In Elements 3.0 - applied noise ninja to smooth shadow and add contrast. Adjusted levels, adjusted hue/saturation, cropped, saved for web. USM at small radius. Dodged and cloned background to smooth out lighting. Save.

Figure about 5.8-6.0 based on simplicity, reasonable lighting, and focus.

Peter, nice shot! Not your typical still life, and it's a testament to the quality of the image that it scored so well (with the DNMC voters, and all)! Well done!

This was my highest score for the challenge. I am surprised it didn't do better.

When I saw this picture of a gyroscope I slapped my head as I thought it represented the perfect depiction of stillness and motion in a single subject. Love the over exposed background. Definitely has a real print feel about it. Great shot and a great finish

Peter - great entry! I didn't get to voting on this one, but you would have had another high score. I'd better watch out, you've been on a roll lately :-)

It technically fits the challenge and is shot well but it comes across as more of a product shot than anything else.

Simple and perfect for the challenge. Did you also try to use a longer shutter speed and following the top as it moves as well? I doubt it would turn out as well as this, but might look interesting too. Nice.

Oooooooooh. I love how it is "still life" and "movement" both wrapped up in one object. I do feel like it is "separate" (as per the challenge description) because if you've ever seen one of these things go, it really does seem like two totally different things. I could see, however, how to some it might not fit the challenge. Good luck! (10)

An interesting, graphic shot. I like the composition and high contrast treatment. Not sure if it counts as "still life" or not, since the only thing that's not moving is the background.
