I was actually taking a picture of the sailboat in the background, when I saw my shadow on the pillar. It's a galvanized piece of metal supporting some sort of navigational aid at the end of the pier. I know this breaks the Rule of Thirds, but the composition is dictated by the width of the pillar, and that's all there is of it.

Anyhow, the silhouette is me taking a picture of my own shadow. 8)

I really like the texture in the pillar and will go back and take a picture of just that to use in other work.

Interesting. I think I would also like it if just cropped down to the pillar and shadow.

Makes for a very interesting photo. You're right - the texture of the pillar adds a lot of dimension. So arty - especially since it breaks a few rules, but as such works so well! I love stuff that's different.
