When I was a kid conkers used to be something that everyone played but we hardly had any horse chestnut trees around and so getting your hands on some was a real job. Nowadays there seem to be millions of conker trees but no one plays with them anymore (tsssh kids today!!!)

The idea for this shot came to me out of nowhere (I had been thinking about Daisy opening a can of shaken up coke before) and I knew it was what I was going to do. There is something strangely magical about the prickly shells which hide these lustrous brown treasures, because its also (somewhat sadly) a sure sign that autumn and winter will soon be on us and we are in for dark dreary days it is almost like nature giving us a final beautiful treasure before she shuts down till the Spring

Anyhooooo I have maundered on too much so all I will add is that I love this shot, possibly one of my faves, therefore I fully expect it to score 4.8314 or something similar

The colors and detail are beautifully captured. For some reason I look at this and think "harvest". I don't think the photo is too busy but I would have preferred that the nut in the foreground be a little less prominent. (i.e., next time, pick up that one and move it away lol). Thanks for the conkers lesson, now I'd like to hear how you are supposed to play with them. Congrats on beating your expected score!

Wow Jon, you beat your estimated score by a long shot. Way to go dude. Thanks for telling us about these guys. I never heard of conkers before. Interesting.

Oh, great job, Jon!! And a great story of reminiscing about childhood. Must be a regional thing because I've never heard of conkers, but you're right about kids today. I think the only thing they are playing are computer games. . .no sandlot baseball anymore. no conkers. What is the world coming to.

Anyway this is a really cool photo, and I love it too!

I love conkers. Their lustre is beautiful. Unfortunately it doesn't last long.

Ahh, takes me back to baking them in the oven to cheat at school - and the inevitable bruised knuckles. :-)
