Doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "the lark in the morning", does it? Poor guy, saddled with such a name...

Just me and a Kori Bustard at about 7 AM at the National Zoo.

post-challenge:

Image is not cropped, and I framed the composition deliberately.

I knew I'd get hurt on the relatively "boring" center composition. But, as I said, I framed this deliberately, because part of what does it for me, for this image, is all that beautiful backlit grass arcing across the frame - all crop alternatives I tried just ruined that dynamic.

The backlighting is lovely here, bustard or no :-) Poor guy, saddled with that name. A difficult cropping situation probably kept you from reaching a 6+ with this.

The backlit grass is great and I like the bits of bokeh in the corners.

That bird is looking right at you, wondering whether you want him to move out of the way so that you can take a picture of the grass. Then he thought he would stay; it's his home, after all. You can take the picture around him. Wonderful.

Having read the comments (something I only do after I comment), I agree; it's not a centered composition, and I keep following the flow of the grass. Thanks for not cropping that out.

To me the composition is as much about the grass as it is the bird. If anything, I see it as a two-thirds/one-third arrangement. I would have been reluctant to crop and I'm a crop queen.

this is gorgeous. and it is not a centered composition. there is a big difference between a centered subject and a centered composition.

Ah, you got good stuff that day! I think it's a lovely shot, nicely sharp, with interesting textures and halo light around his head. I think the composition hurt the score, though. Dead center leaves my eye to wander around. I wonder how it'd look cropped in on the right?

What a flat, flat head it has! Not sure about the centered composition but I very much like the lighting and background.

I've not heard of a bustard. Very pretty backlighting and bokeh.

Nice image - Great sharpness - Like the grasses - Maybe just a tad borng on the composition as he is bang in the middle but great tones and exposure.

An off-centered composition may have worked better in this photo. Also would like to see some of the body.
