The sun is now visible again from my front yard when it rises above the horizon. It has been behind the tree you see in the left of the image for the past week and a half or so. Most folks don't usually give it much thought, but the sun's rising position changes over the course of a year from northeast to east to southeast and back again. The sun rises due east on the vernal equinox (first day of spring) and the autumnal equinox (first day of fall). Right now we're heading into fall, so the sun, which was rising in the northeast in the summer, is now heading back south again and will soon (9/23) be rising due east. This apparent motion of the sun is due to the fact that we orbit it -- the sun is not moving in relation to us (not in any discernible motion that is), we move in relation to it.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I had never thought about the "why" of the sunrise (not that I see any) sunset being in different places, but that does make sense. Thanks -- I learned something today!
