Took this in Kyoto some time back but the natural light was too harsh and there was no way I could reposition the maiko(trainee Geisha). I really liked her pose though and thought it would work if given an old style look. Have been told that the face is overexposed but I wanted to leave it to draw attention to her fixed expression. The Japanese call it 'tatamae' which is basically your social mask. Pity it wasn't just that little bit sharper though!

BTW- The geisha culture and surrounding subcultures refer to their society as 'The Floating World'. With the rest of society changing so quickly they may just float away.

This is an amazing moment you have captured :) It's so emotive. Very well done.

This almost looks like an etching.....
Even with her expression it is very emotive to me.....
Strong elements of design, and it also tells us a story, without words.....

I agree that the glow makes her ghost like and free of any expression..... Very well done IMO.....

I love this. I think the way her face came out is great...the glow makes her seem ghost like. The tiles and banners to her left really tie in a great composition. This is beautiful.
