Challenge: Painting with Light (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Olympus C-5050Z
Location: Saginaw, MI
Date: Jan 20, 2004
Aperture: f/3.6
ISO: 64
Shutter: 10 sec
Galleries: Landscape
Date Uploaded: Jan 24, 2004

A limestone pile covered with snow. It was freezing cold. The light was a 500,000 candlepower rechargeable spotlight. All the PS involved was cropping and a little push on the contrast. This was really how I wanted it right out of the camera. My favorite part of this photo is the difference in the clouds from one side of the pile to the other.

Could use a bit more light in the lower right and lower center since I'm not sure where the dock is.

Very nice. Looks like to different worlds from left to right. Scored this shot the highest on the challenge. Good stuff

Not sure where the moving lights are (at least it is not obvious to me), but still a very nice shot.

This would probably have been better with more contrast, and less sky (the top 1/5th cropped out)

Very serene and calming

I could be wrong (and correct me if I am) but the light souce does not appear to be under your control (seems natural). Aside from the meeting the challenge aspect - boy this is a lovely photo. I love the colors and the dark spots.

A terrific photograph with one of the most beautiful sky transitions I have seen for a long time. I did wonder about cropping the foreground but you are clearly right - it needs it. Reminds me of Salvador Dali. Totally beautiful.
But I will copy in some text I have added to a few other pictures in this category

My only concern is, as you may have guessed from the amount of discussion on the forum re "painting with light" is whether it is "painting with light". It is not obviously so.
Having been lucky enough to judge what is now a few hundred competitions in the last 30 years I feel I should say the first thing that happens is that they are sorted and any that do not immediatly seem to fit the category are dumped (hard but a fact). This is why so many competitions also run an "open category". Your picture, as impressive as it is, would, I feel have been rejected at this stage. "Painting with Light" has a fairly tight definition in photography but still allows a lot of lattitude for creativity.
I suspect that your scores may not reflect what the picture is worth which is a great shame. I believe if I was judging in another category I would have marked 10.
I do hope you understand my reasons for marking it down

Seemed a bit dark on my monitor. Not bad, just a bit. I saved it and adjusted the levels to find a fantastic shot. I like this very much. Best of luck in the challenge.

This is a very cool picture, but I don't understand how it fits the theme.
