Challenge: Painting with Light (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro
Location: My Living Room, 8:30 pm, Phoenix Az
Date: Jan 24, 2004
Aperture: 4.5
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1.5 sec
Galleries: Abstract, Family
Date Uploaded: Jan 24, 2004

This was taken with a horizontally moving strobe light (flashing at appx 0.5 times/min) with my daughter walking appx.perpendicular to the strobe...Post shot I used the "smudge" in photo shop around the edges to give it a surreal look, and to remove some of the dust spots. This was grainier than I would have liked, and I would welcome any help/critiques on how to improve the graininess.

I do like this - Onl one thing that would improve it for me. the image on the left and right are more illuminated than the centre image.
I dragged this into photshop and switched the order - lightest first - middle middle - darkest to the right.
It appeared to produce more consistency and stopped the eye darting from face to face.
In general I think the jumper on the right is just a "tad" over-exposed" and takes the eye a little too much.
Nice picture though and good to see it is within the "photographic" definition of "PWL"

This is a nice image. I think that you have a better understanding of the technique called for in this challenge than do many of the others--which is controlling the light so the camera 'sees' the subject in a way that it normally would not. For instance, the same pretty girl in three places at once. It is one of my favorite photographic techniques. It gives a photographer the freedom to create just about any image they can dream up.

It is hard for me to say what might have improved this image because I am not sure what the message is that you were trying to convey. If the girl’s face were telling most of the story then maybe cropping to a closer shot of the faces would help. Maybe you could have used the color of the lighting to express yourself better.

Anyway, it is a nice image, and in my opinion needs a bit more. I think you are on the right track though. You should play with the technique some more, and do not be afraid to experiment and try different things with lighting, exposure, subjects, etc. Sometimes, at least for me, the best images come from doing something wrong or unintended. When I studied art one of my teachers called them ‘happy accidents.’

I hope this little diatribe helps.
Good luck!

this has a dream-like affect. I have to wonder what you are looking at, and then all the time is this surreal swirling going on in the background. very artistic.

Nice pic, whilst it technically does not fall under "Painting with light" in my mind.
