Since I forgot my memory card over the weekend and I needed to shoot some portraits for class, I dragged my friend out to the city (S.F.)with me to get some candid shots as well as try to take a shot for the street photography challenge. Obviously this wouldn't work for the challenge cuz I took it indoors, but I was just facinated by this guy. I don't know why, but he seemed very interesting to me. I saw him while we were eating lunch literally six feet away from him. He just was sitting there with no food and a glass of ice while he wrote down something on a brown napkin. He would write, then take a sip of his ice (i dunno why he didn't get some water from the cooler 3 ft away, but whatever) and then he would stare into space, seemingly very frustrated about his writing or something. I have no idea what he was writing about, but I really want to know. Also, I was just blatently staring at him the whole time I ate and he completely didn't even realize I was taking his picture even though I was so close to him. It must have been a combination of being used to crowded city life of staring people, and him being so absorbed in his thoughts. I really don't know, but my main point is that I was facinated by him.
Backrground is a bit distracting even though I blurred it A LOT in processing, oh well.

Great candid! He looks deep in thought about something. I think the black & white was an excellent choice for this shot, the border works nice too.

This is a terrific shot! I actually don't think the background is distracting at all, it gives you a feel for the restaurant & makes you fell like you are actually sitting next to this guy. I frequently find myself staring & mesmorized by people, I find people so fascinating. You really captured his emotions here, great shot & the B&W is perfect for this shot.

Neat shot. Everyone has said everything better than I could about the guy. Great b&w processing.

Gotta agree with citymars he's thinking of a new bike! :)
A great shot, which I would consider street photography. I don't feel it's limited to just being outdoors, but anywhere out in public places, like café's, shops, parks etc as well as the streets.
I really like the background and find it adds to the shot rather than distracts, it gives you a sense of his environment. The bike over his head is my favourite element and adds a little quirkiness! The only thing I would maybe change is to rotate clockwise a bit, and crop the bit off the bottom. But that's just me! : )
Fantastic stuff, Leah! : )

great candid! i love the composition. they way he sits in the frame... searching outside of it for the answer to the unknown question. B&W works great!

This is an absolutely beautiful candid. I'm astonished you haven't gotten more comments on it. Composition and BW conversion are wonderful. And the photo has an awesome atmosphere to it. Great job!

This is a great candid - that guy has something serious going on. The only thing I'd do is probably clone out that bicycle on top of his head.

Pffft. It's not love, he's thinking of a bicycle! Can't you see it materializing in the thoughts above his head?

I find it fascinating that he didn't know you were taking his photo. I find that to be rare. Seems when I point a camera at someone they look up immediately.

PS: The b&w is a good choice.

Have to agree with Karmat, love is involved here in some fashion. FANTASTIC candid, so emotive and raw. Love the composition and the B&W treatment really gives it a very intense edge! Great shot!

He looks lovesick or heartbroken.
