to me it was perfectly clear. the guy in the front, well, we can see his face, so it mustn't be about him. It must be about the guy in the back. So the extreme emotion is coming from him, probably spite or jealousy.

This was a rough challenge for a lot of people. Don't be too discouraged. This is a great piece of art. :-)

Ok, after reading your complaints in the scores thread, I guess you'd argue that the motion is coming from the guy in the back. But that's not what comes through to me. And for that matter, even the guy in the back doesn't show extreme emotion.

One of the toughest things is to forget what we know to see things from the voter's perspective. Here, you KNEW the guy in back was your subject and he was showing strong emotion. But I didn't, and apparently neither did most voters. On the other hand, Klstover loved it, and she often does very interesting things, so you're doing fine to connect with her.

All of that said, I still think it's a nice B&W with good composition and solid technique.

Huh. I'll bet you get DNMCed for this, since that face is such in focus. But it says the face of the "emotive subject". To me, the emotive subject is the figure in the back... making this perfectly meeting the challenge. 10 10 10! and one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite, in this challenge.

The focus and black and white tones on this shot are spot on....but I'm not sure I feel it fits the "faceless" criteria. I'm thinking perhaps you were going for more of a statement that smoker statistics aren't faceless...they're real people?
07/31/2007 11:38:56 AM
I don't see any extreme emotion here, just a guy lighting a cigarette.
07/31/2007 02:12:19 AM
Good contrast.

The face is a major element conveying emotion, contrary to the challenge's title and guidelines.
07/30/2007 08:01:00 PM
I don't get the emotion, and not sure that the guy in the foreground isn't the subject, hence not faceless.
07/30/2007 04:04:55 PM
Faceless???
07/30/2007 02:58:29 PM
Is addiction an emotion? Quitting is where the emotions came out for me!! Good photo though.
07/30/2007 02:43:06 PM
Hmmm. Tom. Something about Tom is extremely emotive here... I know, the dude that's OOF wishes he had a smoke? No, that can't be it. Nothing extremely emotive about that, unless the guy's trying to quit. Wait, oh no - you're not insinuating the dude in the back has a thing for Tom are you? Well, I guess that could be extreme, a major yuck factor, but certainly emotive.

From a technical standpoint the image is well done. Good use of DOF to isolate the guy in front yet leave enough detail in the bg to recognize it. The range in the B/W is well balanced covering the full scale.

Definitely an image that makes the viewer wonder I guess. Good luck in the challenge.

Unless you assume the emotive subject is the one in the bg, the face of the main subject IS the main focus of your photo. Sorry but it DNMC for me. However I am not giving you a bad score at all because it is a good shot.
07/28/2007 01:02:57 PM
though i like the dynamic between the out of focs guy and the one in the foreground, it doesn't convey much emotion.
07/28/2007 04:14:59 AM
I'm confused on what this image is trying to convey. I don't understand the title either.
07/28/2007 03:23:19 AM
Emotion? I don't see it. Faceless? Hardly...

Sorry...DNMC

i dont see extreme emotion here, but its a nice photo

My definition of faceless must be different than yours...

What is the etreme emotion and who is having it?
07/27/2007 03:05:15 PM
I very much like this - it actually looks like a jealous lover behind to me, but I'm not sure it fits the challenge too well.
07/26/2007 09:37:37 PM
does not meet challenge
07/26/2007 06:22:16 PM
Not sure what the extreme emotion is, also it's suppose to be faceless.
07/26/2007 02:07:07 PM
I am not sure of the faceless emotion you are trying to convey...?
07/26/2007 12:50:44 PM
Nice picture but what emotion?
07/25/2007 11:25:28 PM
An interesting study,a nd I like the B&W tones. But I don't see any emotion, and the main subject is his face, so you're doubly not meeting the challenge.
07/25/2007 10:11:52 PM
Very nice clear composition, looks good in b&w, 8.

i see a nice shot but i do not see an extreme emotion...many people feel that a good shot should be judged in and of itself, i do not agree, there is no need to have challenge guidelines if they are not followed, if this were a candid,b&w or bokeh challenge i would give this a 10 as it is, i feel i must give no higher than a 6. and as always this is JMO
07/25/2007 12:52:27 AM
Faces are the focal point.
07/25/2007 12:51:02 AM
Really good portrait, but it's NOT faceless nor showing an extreme emotion.
