First off.... the shutter speed, etc. listed is the same on all three.

I pretty much converted from RAW, dodged and burned the eyes, messed a little with saturation to bring the reds down, and added the border.

This is my mom by the way. She is great! I liked these three the best so I'm letting you critique them all.

I'd love to see more light on her hair, it seems a little one toned. Sky is burnt out, but for me thats not such a big issue, it brings my attention to her even more. your mom is obviously a great sport, my mom would never let me do this.

First thing that strikes me is the emotion here, I really like that... moving on to technicals :) Go and check out Cindi's thread on portrait lighting... it seems to be a littttttle bit on the flat side in both but the first one but, in the first one, you blew out the sky... the only fix I can think of would be to get more light on your subject and less in the background... really early in the morning and late evening light make for the best pictures because the light is not only coming in at an angle, it is also much softer than 11 o'clock-ish light... it doesn't need to be diffused. If you have a large white posterboard, it serves well as a reflector (if you don't already have one and are on a budget) and you will probably have to use one to fill in some areas because the sun will be at an angle. I love outdoor portraits because the natural light is beautiful and rarely screws up your colour :) The catchlights in the center portrait are nice but there are none in the one on the right... fill flash might have worked here, but again, you will get some flat, frontal type, lighting.

Your mom is great!! My mom would never pose for me LOL HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN :) Feel free to respond... I will be looking again this evening :)

First off, your mom cracks me up! She reminds me a lot of my mom actually, a big goof ball. The main thing that I noticed is the 2 pictures on the right have a little darkness around your mom's face, probably due to shadowing. If they were all like that it wouldn't be as noticeable, but because the first picture you can see the sun on her face, it would be cool to see her face brighter on the other two as well. Other than that, I really don't see anything that would make me score this less, I really like the DOF in the background.
Oh, and Happy Belathed Birthday!

first of all what a true sport your mom is,way kool! now the hard part, the lighting seems great for this type of shoot,id say the crops are a bit subject but it seems to work in these photos as a group but mabe not inividually,is also stretching the theme a bit (portrait),i may be wrong but seems most portraits are a bit more cut n dry and to the point ,gosh i hate pickin these apart, anywho im thru now and GREAT JOB AND HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY,oh yeah tell your mom she,s lovely and totally a great sport!
