Today we traveled to the Lick Observatory, which we do at least twice most years. This time it was for the Summer Visitors' Program (read: we got to look through some of the telescopes instead of just looking AT them). It was my first time doing this, although my husband and son have gone to this event three or four times. We had a lot of fun -- it was a lovely long drive (and when you can drive across California's central valley in July without A/C and still enjoy it, you KNOW it's a nice drive) and the viewing through the telescopes was just wonderful.
This is the observatory's 36-inch refractor (note: the measurement is the diameter of the lens, not the length -- it's more like 60 feet long). When it was built in the 1880's, it was the largest telescope in the world. In 1610 Galileo discovered four of Jupiter's moons; in 1892, scientists found the fifth one with this telescope.
Grainy, noisy photo, because it was very dim in the building. |

Fantastic shot! I know how difficult these shots are, having worked at many observatories and struggled to get good images of the telescopes inside a lowly lit dome :-) This image is particularly nice because you've really captured coppery colored metal structure over the turquoise dome interior -- it looks awesome! |

Nice shot. The muted tones match the shot perfectly. I've never seen the inside of an observatory first hand so this is a nice surprise....though I can't quite seem to get the voice of Dr. Evil out of my head from the Austin Powers movie. "Don't touch the la-ser". |

It must have been awesome to look through that thing. Turned out quite well considering shooting conditions. I like the composition - it shows how huge that thing really is. |

Nice shot (it actually feels like one that could have fitted nicely in the Rhythm challenge)
Hope your the lens on your Nikon did not feel too emasculated or intimidated by this big boy |

Very impressive. You really give us a feel for the size of that telescope and dome. |

Great job with the composition and POV...We need to make a trip to the Griffith Park Observatory now that it is re-opened. |

I like the perspective - it nicely conveys the magnitude of the telescope. Did you see anything interesting? I think this would be a fun thing to do. |
