Two honeybees (Apis mellifera) on a white prickly poppy (Argemone polyanthemos)

The honeybee was designated as the Kansas state insect in 1976.

One-fourth of the population of honeybees has disappeared in the United States. Scientists are not sure why, but this could adversely affect our food crops.

This is beautifully photographed. The stem looks so pricklly. I read recently that many birds had also greatly diminished in population in the States.

Wonderful capture. Good to see the bees hard at work and sad to hear they are in trouble.
