I feel a story coming on. Brace yourself.

Two and a half weeks ago we came home from ten days' vacation at the beach, to find our landlord on our porch, beginning a painting job he had planned to do while we were gone. Literally before we had been home for three minutes, he dropped a bomb in our laps, to the effect that we would need to either buy our house or move out within three months. (Generous terms, really. He has every right to tell us we need to be out in ONE month, and he's not asking anything unreasonable for the house, either, and he's giving us first crack at it before he puts it on the market.) The house we live in, due to its in-town location, which, ironically, is the thing we like least about it, is not anywhere near a comfortable price for us -- it might be possible for us to buy it, if we rent out the apartment over the garage for the rest of our lives, but we're not sure we want to. So we started looking for a home to purchase; we've been renting for thirteen years (in the same place) and that's long enough for anyone to rent who has a steady, reliable income. So. This has turned out to be a good thing -- a crazy thing, but a good thing -- because it's pushed us to do something we should have done a long time ago, i.e. become homeowners.

The picture above is not from the house we're in now. It's part of the view -- a square-cropped part -- from the front door of the house we hope we can buy; we went to look at it again today. It's a fixer-upper, and it's still a bit of a stretch price-wise, but not so much that we won't be able to manage it if we scrimp, and it's on four acres a ways out of town. We have to sternly tell ourselves, often, that we don't love it. We can't love it, because it isn't ours and there are only about a million hurdles (as anyone who's bought a home can attest) that have to be crossed before it could ever, by the grace of God, become ours.

So. All this means that I don't love this view at all. (If you ever wondered what a hundred and six degrees looks like in a place that gets no rain from May till September, this is it. It will be ever so much prettier from December to April.)

(ETA: I want to be very clear: I love the view. I really do. I want want want want want this property. I'm just trying, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way, to convince myself not to get attached to the place since so many things could go wrong and keep us from getting it. I know most people were picking up on that vibe but I didn't want anyone to think I was serious about the not loving it.)

Stunning view. I could pick up and leave the big city for a view like that -- not to mention the fresh air.

Great story. Hang in there.

My partner, deep down inside, is a car salesman. He's that type of wheeler and dealer. He says never to fall in love with property or cars because there will always be a better deal in the future.
But I'm not like that. I would instantly fall in love with this property and bug him about until he finally said OK. But I know him well enough to know that deep down inside, he would be so excited about it too. But he'd remain stoic.
I saw go for it!!

This will sound really dumb - but I think you are afraid of getting your hopes dashed so what you are doing now with the title of the pic is making your negative reality come true. If you really really want this place, get in there, get your hopes up, change the title of this pic, and don't let fear get in the way! If you get your hopes up, and you do not get the place, all it really means is that something better has been waiting for you to come by. Paint your lovely picture with positive words. :)

You're right... It's a terrible view.

Seriously, if you and your husband have worked out your finances, don't be afraid to take the plunge.

Things tend to happen for a reason, and perhaps it happened here. The first thing when I see that view is that I want to go walking with my camera. Good luck.

You're right. What's to love? -mountains in the distance, a stand of trees, open space, fresh air (yes, from a city perspective, fresh air is part of the view), blue sky...
I hope all the best for you.

And I love the view.

Interesting how one never knows what a new day will bring. I'm sure it will all work out for the best when it's all said and done. Judging from what I can see, there are certainly worse places to call home.

yeah, yeah you can't jinx it by saying that you love it... but i can tell you the view is lovely! i love the way life gives us the nudge when we are sitting idly by enjoying avoidance... embrace the kick in the pants! the garden will go there, and the lily pond right there, one day the swimming pool will go there next to the deck & grill...

What a view. You've obviously given this a lot of thought. Reading between your lines tells me you're not likely to regret this and sometime in the future you'll wonder why you even hesitated. You even named it "dreamland". Trust yourself and good luck.

Go for it! To me, it's the land that has value. Buying four acres is a smart thing, and ten years from now you'll most likely be happy you made the purchase. Good luck, and nice photo by the way.
