Challenge: Lucky 7 II (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon
Location: my garage
Date: Jul 7, 2007
Galleries: Portraiture, Self Portrait

At 4:30 this morning we dropped Aimee off at the airport on her way to Thailand for 2 weeks - 2 very long weeks I am sure. She took the Rebel, the 50mm and the Sigma 18-125 lenses with her. I came home in hopes of getting Aidan to pose proper for me for this challenge. He was really fidgety and not much help at all. I set up the tripod and used the 70-300mm for this shot of myself. Black velvet backdrop, ringlight in front and lightly to the left. I lucked out with the focus. I set the camera up with the plunger and had Rowan take the pic. She stands about 2 feet shorter than where the camera was but she had a blast hitting the button.

Not an amazing picture but it was in general what I was hoping for. An image that allowed me to do some slightly heavier postprocessing. Surprisingly I didnt see any images along these lines in the previous lucky 7 challenge. Hopefully me being recognizable doesnt hurt my score too much.

PP - RAW conversion, crop and rotate, NI, high pass sharpen (hands and arms only), some funky b&w conversion filter that I picked up from some website that has a ton of differnt action type filters (please don't ask me which filter it was), reduced opacity over the color version, minor cloning of stuff on my arm, burning and blurring around shirt, dodging on eyes, resize and USM on hands only. Looking back I did a bunch more stuff - inverted, blurred and softlighted a layer on top, maybe some other things too. I dont remember them all now. But I know they are all advanced legal. Didnt move anything or delete anything from the image.

Heres to another mid 5 score.

Very simple but clear and explicit. I like this photo in that the hands and fingers are in focus and well lit and all else is secondary. (9)

A tighter composition would be stronger, I think. I like the clarity on the hands, and the read shirt works well.

How long did it take you to think of this one, and does your thumb count? LOL
Anyways, I think your processing is a little to dark.

Great DOF and lighting!!!! The red shirt is subtle enough yet adds some oomph.
