I think it may have been nice to see the foreground with a sharper focus & let the background fade to a blur.

Is that why they do this? I thought it would be so the rain could get to the roots, but still allow people to walk in that area. Never heard of "digging dogs" attacking tree roots. :)

I like the lines and patterns of the metal grate but I almost think i would like it without the tree, with just the patterns of the grate in the shot, maybe that would be too boring but the tree really doesn't add any interest for me. I also like the use of black and white with this shot. 7
