Used selection tools to darken the background, I don't think it works very well... I would like to have a somewhat small home studio :)

Nice image, though! You did a good job. Wish I had a small studio as well.

As a last resort you could run around the edge with the blur tool, especially if there are any sharp unnatural edges. Nice interesting shell.

You can do some easy stuff to start a home studio. I sometimes use a ping-pong ball with a slot cut out to put over an diffuse the flash. I bought a yard of black velvet at a yardage store for a few bucks, and use it for some of my pictures. My studio is wherever in the house I can conveniently set things up. If you want to spend a few more bucks for something more professional search ebay for a couple items I got such as "Pro Photo Softbox Light Tent Shooting Light Cube 24x24" and "2 Studio Strobe/Lighting/Flash Portrait Kit 1" if you can get around your camera's preflash.

I think it looks better than you think it does, though there are some points where it looks clipped by the selection tool. You might try softening the brush, or afterwards feathering the selection. At least until you get that small home studio, of course :)

Nice POV, though the lighting seems to make the middle of the shell look soft focus. Good handling of the background.
