I have been very traditional in my photography in the past. I am feeling the need to change the way I express myself through my photography. In the last few months, I have felt a slight change in the way I approach my picture taking and hopefully, this year will be a turning point for me. For one, I am becoming more and more interrested in B&W photography, or at least less colourful photography. Contrasts and textures is something I want to persue a little more. Also, real life or living photography is also something I want to know more about.

Enough about me: This picture was SO processed, I am surprised it still looks like a photo. ALL the post processing was DPC legal: levels, curves, contrast, channel mixer, saturation, NeatImaged (4 times), crop, resize, USM, Gaussian blur, and border. Not necessarily in that order. I can probably NEVER recreate this exact image, although I kept many stages saved to disk. I SO MUCH wanted to dodge and burn the rooftops in the center, to help bring them out, but ALAS.....

Let's see what 2004 shall bring......BRING IT ON, BABY! I'M READY!

Fantastic reflection on the ice crust. Great resolution you took last year (2004). Will you take one this year?

Bummer!!! The stack of three icy cold picts from the Ottawa/Gatineau/Montreal area is gone! Oh well.

This is an excellent piece of work, with a great mix of B&W and color. A little more detail in the darker areas might be nice, but the photo works very well as it is. Funny enough, this image is much much better than any of the 'free study' winners...

Congratulations, Mario, I very much like your new year's resolution, and the picture that goes with it.

Hmmm. An icy sunset. The texture and absence of texture with the contrasting light and dark is wonderful. The hint of color gives it just the right glow. I love it.

I'm glad you couldn't change the rooftops - part of the beauty of this picture is the contrast between the foreground and backgroun and that the foreground is so much lighter. I think it works just perfectly as it is now. :)

Wow! Never did I expect to see myself here in 4th! I thought people might not get my new dark view on things, but perhaps i'm on to something. Anyhow, a good start to the new year. Thanks to all that commented!

In hindsight, I probably could have pulled this image off without all the post processing. Somehow, I started in one direction, and just kept going, and going. I now look back and take my original image and see that I problably could have accomplished the same, or better, results without all the processing.

Beautiful image!!

Very pretty. I love how the light reflects on the forground. The silhouetted background is also very pretty. This only seems to fit in with the challenge because of the title, but oh well. I think this was a hard challenge. Overall this is really beautiful. ~Heather~

This light in the ice is unbelieveble, surreal, where is the sun light in the sky?

Coloreful sunsets are "stock" for a reason - they are visually exciting and attractive. This is an interesting study in a darker season, and it's calm and attractive.

Hey, this is great! I love this kind of dark and moody shot! Really gives you a feel of cold winter. Only thing I think it may be missing is the moon, but then again, that would be stock...well done and good luck.
