Challenge: Free Study 2007-05 (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Location: Paris in my studio
Date: May 30, 2007
Aperture: 10
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Black and White, Studio
Date Uploaded: May 31, 2007

This is Lorena (also featured in my black and white portrait II entry). It's been quite a time since I wanted to experiment these 40s film noir movie stars look on one of my models. Lorena was the one and only, I didn't hesitate a second!
I went together with Lorena to buy this beautiful black dress especially for this shooting.
We had a hair stylist (Serge) and a make up artist (Geraldine) to do the job and make her look like Ava Gardner or Gene Tierney! When it was finished, I just couldn't beleive my eyes! It was perfection! Flawless! I really wasn't expecting to be surrounded by such a skilled team.
And as a matter of fact, the studio work is not only the photographer's work but a team work! The hairstylist and the make up artist are as important as we are. In this precise case, the picture would be nothing without them.

Anyways, post process includes:
-Full desat
-Dodge and burn
-Sharpen
-Brightness / Contrast
-Curves
-Levels
-Picture rotation and crop.

I unfortunately have a unflattering comment to give, hopefully it is still helpful to you.

The light on right side of her forehead is acting in a way as so to make her forehead look larger than it is. I think you should not make this mistake again, as it really is a distraction from her beauty. I saw the other picture in your profile and that serves her facial features much better.

OMG Laurent, I feel embarrassed now after the comment I left during the challenge. (The Micheal Jackson part).
Sadly, I still see it and honestly can't look at this image without still seeing it - so sorry.
My apologies to Lorena if / when you see her next.

If you have put so much energy into this one I am really curious now what the next big thing will be that you were talking about. :)

What we discussed about backgrounds would also be nice to implement in this style of shot. Make a big portfolio map, go to some cool bars and restaurants in Paris and arrange an on location shoot or something. You have the charm to convince them. :)

Great lighting and your B&W conversion was nicely done. The post-processing and/or noise reduction left the skin far to plastic-looking in my opinion. Please don't take offense to this next comment, but it was my very first reaction when I saw it. I thought I was seeing Micheal Jackson for a micro-second - skeery huh?

I'm not too sure how I really feel about this image. The expression on her face doesn't really match her body posture.

Nice but too much Neat Image on her face and the back of the chair on the left of the image is distracting. Good tones though. 7

Nice girl, interesting b&w. The eyes could benefit from some spot editing.

The soft focus and dark lighting work very well here. There is such emotion in her stare. Great job.

I like the b and w...she is pretty, but I would have liked the camera down just a little, enough to crop the top 5% of the shot 7

I love the light and tone but it looks as if she's almost plastic. Maybe too much Neat Image???
