My partner's a scientist and helpfully obtained the tray for me. The liquid is simply water with red and blue food colouring. Daylight through my windows for lighting, shot from a tripod.

E6, ohh no that was my sample ;-) Spot on picture showing real science IMO a little less DOF might have worked.
