These are fresh out of the oven: Mexican Wedding CAkes, rounded on top and about 3/4 inch across. I'm taking a chance that they look yummy enough to capture the imagination of those who know them; if most viewers don't know them, this won't get a great score.

Food shots always stop me in my tracks. I don't know what they are but I have a great imagination about how nice they will taste ....and please, I will take 12 dozen of them right now (lol). They look absolutely delicious!
I would of given you a '10' because they look soooooo good!

Nice close in framing to remove everything apart from the cakes. Composition and framing are of course unique, but the thing that you've got right here is to include a single complete cake, and only parts of others. This gives a subject to an image where it would otherwise be difficult to find one. And what's wrong with putting your subject in an environment of clones?

The thing that I'd like to see, yet the thing which might not have been possible to capture, is more color. The cakes are quite bland and there isn't a great deal of contrast between iced and non-iced areas. If you had been able to use the almonds and pecans in your composition that may well have helped the contrast.

All in all, you took the right approach to this one and made the correct compositional choices. A little more color would be nice though.

I had quite a few requests for the recipe, so here goes:
Mexican Wedding Cakes: 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 cup butter, softened, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 2 cups all-pupose flour, 1 cup finely chopped almonds or pecans. 1/4 teaspoon salt, additional powdered sugar for rolling. Preheat oven to 325. In a large bowl combine 1/2 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla. Blend well. Stir in flour, nuts and salt until dough holds together. Shape into 1/2-inch balls – about 1 tablespoon of dough. Do not flatten, these should be globes, with only the bottom a bit flattened. Place inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 15-20 minutes until set but not brown. Remove from cookie sheets. Cool slightly and roll in powdered sugar while still warm. Cool completely and reroll in powdered sugar.
