Yes, this is a black sqirrel. They are extremely common in southern Ontario. THis baby seemed to have lost his mother...he kept running up to me. I am not a big squirrel fan, but felt bad, gave it a few peanuts, and got the neighbours kids to use their cat box to take it to a nearby forest. Didn't want it climbing up my kids legs, plus I have a big dog (which would have made an amazing shot..she just sat there sniffing it...I ran to grab her away in case the squirrel was carrying diseases, or got gently pawed to death). I eneded up sticking my camera right in the little guys face, and he wasn't fazed, though he really wanted to be picked up or something.
I started thing..man he is 'silky-smooth', then gathered my wits and posted it.

Well the black squirrels have not crossed Lake Erie yet - but I will keep an eye out for them. This is cute and love your story that goes with it. The mom in me wants to find this little guy a home!

I have never seen a black squirrel! He's so adorable, but I feel awful that he's lost him mom...I hope he's alright :(

Awwww. . . he's so cute. And I feel so sad that he lost his mom. I hope he makes it! Poor adorable little fellow. I love squirrels. This one to me looks so unusual looking but pretty -- because I don't think I've ever seen one down here in Texas.

Black squirrels? Haven't seen any of those since I was somewhere around junior high age. We lived in the southern part of Michigan at the time and not only were they everywhere, they were quite friendly - and insistent. They liked to come in the house. Thanks for a nice memory! Love the bit of grass in the foreground and the reflection in his eye.

This is so cute!!! Is it a black squirrel? I've seen albinos before, but never one with fur this dark. It looks too real for you to have burned it in! He's adorable.

Just so perfect, and I also love the DOF in the background, as it helps to highlight this cute critter.....

The nearly pure black and white tones work so well for this picture. Nice contrast and angle.
